Construction is one of the most resource-intensive industries in the world. We've always known that, and it's shaped how we think about the materials we use, the waste we produce, and the legacy of every building we work on. So when the opportunity came to sign the British Chambers of Commerce's Circularity in Practice pledge, it felt like a natural next step.

Circularity in Practice is an initiative inspired by His Majesty The King, brought together under the British Chambers of Commerce, to encourage businesses across the UK to make reuse a reflex, embracing circular practices of re-use, remanufacturing and recycling as a matter of course rather than an afterthought.

By signing the pledge, we've committed to five things: to make a formal commitment to circular practice; to develop an action plan with measurable goals within six months; to identify the partners we need to make that plan deliverable; to act, embedding circular thinking into our day-to-day operations in a way that drives long-term behaviour change; and to share what we've done within a year, so others can learn from it.

For a construction business, this means looking hard at how we procure materials, what happens to what we remove from site, how we can design and specify for disassembly and reuse, and where we can reduce waste at every stage of a project. It isn't a simple problem. But it's one worth taking seriously, and one where our experience and knowledge of the built environment puts us in a good position to make a genuine contribution.
